Do you see the welcome message on the VFD when you start LCDd?

If so, try a simple command like lcdproc T. You should see the time on the VFD.

Check the LCDd log file for any messages. It appears that the lcdproc command you issued may have crashed the LCDd daemon.

However, the remaining frustration ..... remains! But now mode2 thinks that /dev/lircd does not exist, and /dev/lirc is busy.....
[root@mythbox mythtv]# mode2 -d /dev/lircd
mode2: error opening /dev/lircd
mode2: No such device or address
[root@mythbox mythtv]# mode2 -d /dev/lirc
mode2: error opening /dev/lirc
mode2: Device or resource busy
And chmod'ing /dev/lirc0 to 777 makes no difference...
Please read the LIRC documentation carefully, especially the testingsection.

The argument to mode2 should be an LIRC device file which in your case is /dev/lirc0 (or /dev/lirc). /dev/lircd is not an LIRC device file, it is the LIRC daemon.

mode2 -d /dev/lirc is returning a device busy error message because the LIRC device file is being used by lircd (the deamon). Kill the deamon and then try mode2.

It appears that a previously installed version of LCDd is being run - remove all previous versions, and then make and make install the one with imon support.

The directional pad does not work like the other buttons - it emulates a mouse. Several patches have been provided in these forums by other users. Please try one of them.

P.S. Thank you to all that have contributed these patches :)

Make sure you remove any previous version of LCDproc that may have been installed when you installed Linux - it looks like you are picking up another version.

Hi, I think you need to use the Sasem driver, not the iMON driver.

Patrick, Greg:
I think we discussed this before, but does reducing the LCDd refresh rate help? BTW on both my test systems LCDd is operating at the normal rate and does not appear to influence the IR aspect.

Hi DataPath,
Sorry about the delay in responding. Just to make sure we're on the same page you are proposing a 2-level driver structure - the lower level driver just interfaces with the imon device at the USB level, and there may be multiple upper level drivers, e.g. lirc, mouse, vfd, etc. And the lirc_dev driver is a driver above this 2-level structure.

I think it is a good idea. At the moment my day job doesn't leave me with any time to work on this new idea - if you would like to take it up I will be happy to assist in testing, etc. Let's leave the current driver as is and set this up as new set of drivers.

Cheers,

Try using the imon-pad config file (copy lircd.conf.imon-pad to /etc/lircd.conf)

IR remote (lirc) freeze issue - please read

Finally got some time to look at the IR freeze issue. If your remote also freezes occassionally try this new version of lirc_imon.c and let me know how it works for you.

Also set the "gap" line in /etc/lircd.conf as follows:

Code: Select all

  gap 0
Note that this is for the Multimedian and possibly RSC (stick) controllers/remotes only. The PAD remote is not affected by this patch and AFAIK does not exhibit the freezing behavior anyway.

Hi folks,
I haven't made much progress debugging the irrecord issue and lircd getting stuck occassionally. I'll try again this weekend and let you know if I need help testing any fixes.

One step at a time :)

Does "lcdproc T" work ok? Add other options like M C X, etc. Is LCDd stable and the VFD displaying and scrolling fine?

Hi JR,
I had significant problems when I put the IMON board on the same power rail as the HDD. The IR was flaky - it was transmitting garbage - but I don't remember how the VFD was affected. Before you go out and buy a larger power supply try running the system without the CD-ROM connected and if possible put the video card on the HDD rail. We need to see if the VFD works at all so make sure it is the only device on the power rail...
